ELEGANT LIVING ROOM DECOR FOR SUMMER
I just love summer, there is nothing like the laidback lifestyle, sitting and working outside, windows and doors open…
Easy dinners, get-togethers with friends and family, longer days…I think I can speak for most of us, it is the best time of the year. Everything is just so simple, no fuss, no stress.
We try to soak up as much summer as possible where we live – we only get a couple months of hot weather. But as long as there’s sunshine, I’m happy!
I recently shared our new in-ground pool design and furniture (stay tuned for the reveal soon!), we’ve been enjoying and loving our new backyard space so much.
I love to bring that easy, breezy feel inside our home for the summer season as well.
I’m a huge fan of all things coastal and I’ve been leaning on this look more and more through the years. I talk all about my love for coastal chic decorating and how I use it throughout our home, if you’re interested in reading more.
Eventually we hope to move south, where we can enjoy warmer temperatures all year long. The winters here are long and brutal!
Many of you know by now I’m all about blue and white decor and how much I love chinoiserie. I’ve been using it throughout our home for a while now. I’ve incorporated gorgeous bright green into my decor for summer this year and I have to say, I am in so in love with the mix.
What a fresh and crisp feel it adds to our home. It’s bold, but still elegant and sophisticated, it’s coastal and preppy and is such a fun addition to our summer living room decor, don’t you think?
Since this color is so strong visually, all you need are a few small doses to make a very big impact.
I kept the added green hues just to my faux hydrangeas, a couple of small greenery touches and our new Lisa Fine block print pillow covers and Leaf green pillow covers from Arianna Belle.
Living in a wooded neighborhood lends lush green views to our windows as well.

I talked a little bit about using color in our spring living room, which showcases heavy pops of bold blue hues – you know I love my blues!
SUMMER DECOR THROUGH THE YEARS
If you’re a longtime reader, then you’ve seen much of my summer decorating and styling throughout the years. Feel free to peruse all things summer for even more summer inspiration!
Below are some of our favorite summer posts:
OUR GORGEOUS SUMMER-INSPIRED PILLOW COVERS
I’m truly fortunate to be able to work with luxury pillow designer Arianna Belle. We collaborate every season to develop a pillow story that speaks to my seasonal theme and color palette.
This season was all about infusing those pretty green fabrics and prints that will compliment our existing decor for summer, while keeping the look fresh and breezy.
I love how these greens pop against my signature blues, and my blue and white chinoiserie pieces I love so much.
We added a pop of blue piping as well for a gorgeous, preppy touch. I’m such a huge fan of anything with piping. It elevates the look and gives a more luxe finishing detail.

If you saw my recent spring entryway refresh, you’ll recognize our chic new blue lamps. I moved them here to complete my summer pillow story and just love how they finish the look in our living room.
I think this vignette with our blue lamps and coral sculptures against this stunning pillow combination is one of my favorites ever….you know how I love my symmetry!

SUMMER DECOR ON OUR BOOKSHELVES
When it comes to styling and decorating our bookshelves, I rarely do a complete overhaul.
I leave the top shelves as is and I often leave the rest of our shelves the same for a couple of seasons with just a few changes here and there.
I always rotate my pieces from my existing decor arsenal as well. I do buy a few new things from time to time, but much of what you see throughout our home is moved around from space to space each season. Or it goes back into storage and other pieces get pulled out.
Styling our bookshelves is a huge undertaking and for that reason, I’ve kept the decor very similar to how I styled them for spring, with just a few simple updates.
I added a few extra blue and white pieces, and changed the large solid ginger jars from white to blue…that is it.
Simple decorating in keeping with my easy, breezy summer lifestyle!

COFFEE TABLE DECORATING DETAILS
I usually create a simple display on our ottoman and I always use decorative trays to ground my accessories, since this is an upholstered piece. Trays also help to keep decor cohesive looking and give pieces more importance.
My go-to ottoman or coffee table styling staples often include the following items:
- Decorative trays
- Coffee table books and smaller books for stacking
- Decorative boxes
- Candles
- Florals
- Ginger jars
- Bowls
- Vases
- Pretty decorative objects such as coral and shells
- Coasters for drinks

My decor for summer on our ottoman is very simple this season, with a focus on coral, shell and glass.
A decorative box and scented candle add a punch of color and pattern to the mix, for added visual interest and to tie everything together around our living room.

Love this chic addition to our table? It’s faux but looks so real!
LIVING ROOM DECORATING FOR SUMMER
Summer decorating is synonymous with coastal decorating, which is one of my all-time favorite looks.
Since I love our home to have an elegant and chic, coastal feel year round, many of my decorating tips on decor for summer are found around our home from season to season.
Below are a few of my favorite ways to decorate our living room for summer. It really doesn’t have to be complicated!
SUMMER DECORATING TIPS
- Change your pillow covers to light and airy, summer-inspired prints, fabrics and colors
- Add coastal elements throughout such as shells and coral
- Add a pop of color and use it strategically – I used green this summer and highlighted just a few key pieces with it – our pillows and florals
- Incorporate woven textures like baskets, boxes, trays and containers
- Use light textures – I love turkish towels as throws for color and a laidback look
- Change art prints for a seasonal look
- Use lighter scented candles that speak to easy, breezy summer days
