Welcome to our son’s modern coastal teen bedroom makeover! I think I’ve only ever shared snippets of this room in the past and today, I am thrilled to share our coolest makeover yet. We pulled this refresh off in only a few days by keeping the moody (and very sea-worthy) wall color – Ralph Lauren Blue Lagoon, all of the furniture is the same as before, and by only updating some accessories, this modern coastal teen bedroom was born. We cleared all the clutter and made room for some statement-making design, which I must say, has quickly become my favorite room. Keep scrolling for the full reveal!

FIRST – TAKE A LOOK AT THE BEFORE!
It was a really fun, cool room before, with a nostalgic nod to classic rock ‘n roll and sports, and although I will truly miss the Stones print in here, the room became overrun with almost 10 years of accumulation – hockey trophies, a Hess gas station limited edition collection of trucks, tchotchkes everywhere, stuffed animals (who now happily reside on a shelf in the closet!), and just piles of stuff covering every surface…you name it. It was time to clean up, streamline, pare back, and modernize this space. Crossing my fingers it stays this way!
THE RESULT – A CLEAN, MODERN COASTAL TEEN BEDROOM
This is a small room, filled with lots of big pieces and there’s not a ton of space to navigate. By cleaning everything up and keeping the look simple and somewhat streamlined, his bedroom now feels like a calm retreat. Together with my son, we picked out some perfect pieces from Walmart’s coastal theme bedroom collection – and I have to say, he’s got great taste – and there are so many fabulous finds in this collection!
I was very pleasantly surprised by how affordable everything is from the Walmart Home line – especially the accessories, it’s so easy to pull together an entire room from their carefully selected items. They also have free shipping for most orders over $35 AND free returns – that’s my kind of online shopping!
Right away, he gravitated toward this coastal glass lamp, which I love for it’s old-school vibe. You can find similar ones here and here. It’s simple lines don’t compete with the other items on the dresser – which, by the way, is a family hand-me-down. It was my mother’s, my uncle’s and my brother’s, it’s now been in our son’s bedroom since he was two years old. Hence, the chippy paint and wear and tear.
One of my favorite quick DIY projects I enlisted my hubby to oversee in here, was to build this shadow box for his American flag. It makes the flag pop right off the wall and even though our theme is modern coastal teen bedroom, it helps to keep a sense of nostalgia in the room – I always love a mix of old and new. Many of you know that I live in Canada, but you may not know I am American – and with all of the pieces we removed in this room, this was the one item he was adamant about keeping…I love that so much!We found the perfect pillows to accent the space, with enough detail to add visual interest, but still keep our look clean and modern. I love these blue fringe denim pillows, that match his headboard perfectly. And the banded button front ivory pillows compliment the denim beautifully. There’s such great detailing in these pillows and they were such a steal! The fringe pillows were $12 and the pair of button-front pillows was $24 – I don’t think you can find a better deal and such an upscale look.
I’ve had this horse photograph for many years, it was a gift from a very talented friend of mine, who shot them years ago. They’re wild horses that live on a remote island and we love the fierce but calming energy they bring to the room – I love how it compliments the lamp and pillows in our modern coastal theme.
STREAMLINED BOOKSHELVES WITH MODERN SENSIBILITY
The shelves were the worst of it! We cleared off all the stuff and started with a blank slate. Will they stay this way? Probably not, ha! Teens are messy. At least mine are! I will have to live vicariously through these photos, I’m almost certain!I used accessories we already had and downloaded some free printable art to frame from here, here and here. The baskets and natural elements help to pull together our modern coastal look.
Thank you so much for touring our son’s modern coastal teen bedroom! I hope you love it as much as we do – and I hope it stays as clean as this! Wish me luck!
