HOW TO CUSTOMIZE YOUR LIGHT FIXTURES : 3 SIMPLE TIPS
If you follow along with me on Instagram, I mentioned the other day that I recently bought chandelier shades for our master bedroom light fixture to give it some new life and an update. Last year, when we gave this room a makeover, we updated the paint, lighting and bedding. I love to find ways to bring change and update our home, and I also happen to have an obsession with lighting, and finding ways to update without spending a fortune. Today, I’m sharing three simple tips to customize your light fixtures.
Above is a shot from our makeover last year featuring our Spring/Summer bedding (which will be making a reappearance very soon!) – you can read more about it here. I went from a more traditional chandelier to this modern, streamlined one. I love anything brass and I was thrilled when I found it. As time went on, I found it needed something extra to give it a little sophistication. I wanted to add a more tailored look to this fixture, and new shades are such an easy way to customize a light like this. Even swapping out old shades for new ones on any chandelier will easily and inexpensively give you a whole new look.I’m also seriously thinking of removing our drapes and installing roman blinds, to make the room feel bigger and brighter – it’s a tight space in here and we can use as much ‘visual’ space as possible. What do you think of the new addition? Do you prefer it this way or the previous look? What I love about it is, for less than $50 it’s transformed into a much more elegant look, and even though it’s a small change, it elevates the over look and feel.

Do you recognize this light fixture? It was in our kitchen and we just recently moved it into our entrance.
We’ve had this fixture since we moved into our home and I love it now, as much as I loved it then. Originally, it was not a two-toned color. A few years ago I decided I wanted a brass fixture but didn’t want to invest the money at the time, and I still really loved this light. So, instead, I bought a bottle of acrylic paint, grabbed a brush, and climbed on top of the island to give it a fresh coat of paint.
Below is our light from it’s previous life. Our kitchen has gone through some changes too, if you’ve never seen them before, you can see them here. And there are more coming! I’ll be sharing the new lights (I told you I love to update them!) very soon!
This fixture is perfect in our foyer – it’s much better than what we had previously, which was a vintage piece. I loved it, but it was time to change!Below is the previous light, from last month’s post about styling my console table. By the way, if you read the post, as you can see, right now this table is styled with a mix of the different looks I was trying to decide on! Read all about these looks here. The kitchen light is SO much better here, don’t you think?Sometimes subtle changes make a really big difference.
Below, I’ve linked to this fixture in the original color and the paint supplies. It took a few coats of paint over a day or two, to get it to the opacity I wanted, without using primer. It was so easy and quick and I have a completely custom looking light fixture.

Speaking of subtle changes, you guessed it, I added new shades to this chandelier too. That’s right, the same shades as the bedroom also bring this fixture up a few notches.I’ve been thinking about doing this for a while now, and while I love it as it was (shown below) from my Spring dining room post – read more about it here – I’m loving this new and fresh, tailored look. The best part is, if I get tired of them, I can just remove them. Or even add black ones for a rich and moody feeling.I think they make a really big difference and help this fixture look more complete.
Did you ever get the chance to see my home last Christmas? In the photo below, I simply draped some crystals that I had removed from an old fixture, for some added glam factor for the holiday season. It’s so easy! You can find these anywhere – vintage stores, online, hardware stores…it’s a fun way to add a little bling. I’ve linked to some below that you can add to one of your lights!
