RELAXING AND AIRY SUMMER BEDROOM WITH COASTAL ACCENTS
If you know me well, you know I change our bedding quite often. I am somewhat obsessed with finding new linens that help to create a new look in our bedroom without spending a fortune. Our bedrooms are our sanctuaries, and should feed our soul every morning when we wake up, and every night when we turn out the light. I love the feeling of something new and fresh in our bedroom, and updating our bedding is the perfect way to bring in a new season. It can be as simple as swapping out pillows, or adding a few seasonal touches that compliment the changes happening outside. Today I’m sharing how I achieved this year’s airy and relaxed summer bedroom look, decorated with coastal accents that I love so much.

If you’re a long time reader, you’ve seen our bedroom go through many changes! Some with paint, some with bedding and accessories. We’ve had the same main furniture pieces in here for the last 5 or 6 years (some much longer!), however I’m always looking for simple ways to give this space a refresh without breaking the bank. I share all of my different bedroom looks here, on my SHOP MY BEDROOM page, where everything is also available to purchase.
This season, I wanted to keep the look of our bedroom light and airy, with a relaxed coastal vibe. I didn’t change our bedding from this past Spring (see the look here), I simply removed some layers, and added a few new ones as well as new pillows to bring in that relaxed summer bedroom look I was after. I kept the tailored, and crisp bedding I found last season (find it here), and decided that the rest of the elements in the room would bring a more carefree feeling that I was after. To me, summer decorating is about easy, laid back style, where you feel transported to another place. Who doesn’t love the feeling of being on vacation? Our home already has somewhat of a casual feel to it, and I love to enhance that even more when the weather turns warmer. I’m a terrible swimmer, I won’t swim in the ocean (yes, it’s true!), and I hate the feeling of sand in my toes. I know, what you’re thinking! But I do love the feeling of the beach, the soft ethereal colors, and everything that coastal elements evoke…dreamy, far away places, where nothing matters.
To reinforce my theme, I brought up our old living room lamps, that now reside in our basement. I have a small little office nook down there that I set up for occasional work, and the kids sometimes go down there to study as well. These lamps are actually perfect downstairs, but for the purpose of building a coastal color palette, I brought them up here for the summer. You can find similar lamps here.
Next, I ‘shopped my house’ and our bedroom, as I do every season, and found a few beach-inspired pieces that I love. Blue agate, coral, shells…I keep some of these items around all year, because I love them so much. I arranged them together with some fresh hydrangeas in a ginger jar and I have an instant coastal vibe happening. I love any hydrangeas, but I really love these green hydrangeas, they’re so delicate and pretty.
This striped blanket that I picked up a few years ago from HomeSense is a favorite. It has a seaside vibe and is a little bit boho with it’s fringe detail. I use this all year long as well, and it goes just about anywhere in our home. It’s great to grab pieces like this when you find them, especially if you know you can use it in so many different spaces. I love the laid-back look of a blanket casually thrown on the bed, and it creates the perfect base for my tray. It brings in another layer and adds texture – another coastal element I was looking for. You can shop a similar blanket here.
I’ve also been on a lantern and basket rampage lately. I’m obsessed with anything woven, or natural textures. Everyone has baskets, but for some reason, I suddenly want woven textures everywhere this summer, as if I’ve discovered them for the first time! I talked a little bit about this in two of my recent outdoor posts. You can see how I used some gorgeous lanterns and beautiful baskets on our patio here. I also incorporated some new woven rattan chargers and napkin rings in my summer tablescape here. I can’t get enough of the different textures for this season, and I wanted a hint of it in our summer bedroom as well.
I found these gorgeous woven white lanterns to bring in more of that natural element I wanted. I love the large scale, and I chose to go with white, rather than natural, to keep the look a little more serene, and again, I really wanted that airy and relaxed summer bedroom look in here. I love the vibe they bring in and I’m also using these in our living room, so stay tuned for my post coming soon!
My preppy, tailored bedding paired together with my new, casual, coastal pillows, is such a fun mix. I picked up two blue and white striped euro shams, and an amazing nautical-inspired accent pillow, with navy and light blue rope detailing. So gorgeous. I bought all of them at HomeSense, so unfortunately, I can only link similar looking ones for you. I wish I could find the exact source, because I know so many of you will want this pillow! I promise to do my best and keep looking!I love the way it beautifully ties all of the blues together in the room.
As you know by now, I love to mix pattern, and getting a glimpse of all the beautiful pillow detail happening in one eyeful makes my heart skip a beat. The labyrinth embroidery on the pillowcases, the bold, navy tailored king shams, that soft, misty stripe on the euro shams, the geometric pattern of the rope on my new pillow against the small scale geo print on the two pillows behind it…there’s a lot of pattern, but it’s not overwhelming. The colors are soft, the scale of the patterns work together (large print against small print for example), and the patterns themselves all compliment one another. All atop my bright, white, light and airy bedding.
