OUR KIDS’ SMALL BATHROOM MAKEOVER REVEAL!
I am so happy to FINALLY be able to share this little bathroom of ours with you today. Since we’ve lived in our home (seven years and counting), I’d been searching for the right look to create in this space – and I’m beyond thrilled I finally went for the look I’ve wanted now for a few years. I knew it was going to be wallpaper, most likely blue, but I was torn between grasscloth and a bold, vibrant pattern. I decided on the grasscloth in the end for an upscale traditional feeling. Even though this is the kids’ bathroom, it’s the main bathroom in our home for guests, so I was very particular about creating just the right look. Bare with me, it’s not an easy room to photograph – there are no windows (not fun!) and it’s tiny in here! I did my best with these photos, which, unfortunately don’t do this bathroom as much justice as they should. In person, it’s quite something, and I have to say, its perfect…probably my favorite room in the house (I’m not joking!)…I come in here several times a day and close the door just to take it all in. Come on in and have a look at our small bathroom makeover reveal…
First, let’s start with the wallpaper. I ordered this one online thinking it was actual grasscloth (my mistake for not reading the fine print!) – I quickly realized when it arrived and took it out of the packaging, that it’s really a faux grasscloth, vinyl paper. At first I was so upset and discouraged that my project would be put on hold, I was so excited I was getting grasscloth that I’ve dreamed about for years…but after some serious consideration and feedback from many people – I decided to go with it in the end.I was a little turned off at the idea of a faux paper, however since this is the kids’ bathroom, and it’s a small space, there will be a lot of steam with the amount of time they spend in here (we have a preteen and teen, so you can imagine!). I figured I couldn’t go wrong with the vinyl and it’s such a good imitation – seriously, you have to put your nose right up to it and touch it to be able to tell. Win-win in my opinion. Here’s the before, and in case you missed this post a few weeks ago, you can read all about my plans and see more of it here. The difference is incredible. The beautiful blue and the textured look of the grasscloth add so much visual interest, and draw your eye straight upward to crown molding. The blue is rich and soothing, and almost has a chambray feel to it. I love it…I’m so happy I kept it.
Would you believe I wallpapered this all by myself? Yes I did. I’ve never done it in my life (on my own, that is), and last week I was so discouraged that we still hadn’t started this project, I just dove head first and went right for it. I looked it up online, watched a few videos on youtube (I literally just googled it), and by 11 pm that night it was complete! It wasn’t the easiest thing to tackle, and the corners and doorway gave me a lot of frustration – but I persevered and got through it – I could not be more proud of myself for doing it and I’m not only thrilled with the results, I’m so impressed with my handywork! It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you put your mind to it – trust me on this!!!Even though the pattern has a repeat, I purposely didn’t match it up to give it more of an authentic look – the seams are visible with real grasscloth, and I wanted to create the same thing here by intentionally making them show.
Onto our new light fixture that was provided to me by Wayfair…I am in love. With it’s three elegant shades and brass detailing, it lends a refined and sophisticated look, and because the shades sit above the electrical box, rather than below it, your eye is drawn upward to the ceiling once again. It really maximizes on the vertical space, which is key in a small room, creating the illusion of a larger space. The mirror is my same, fifteen, or maybe even twenty-year old mirror I’ve had forever and handpainted gold…which still needs to be finished (I never bought more paint when I ran out!). I do love it none the less!My blue and white dishes that I use to hold soaps and candles are the perfect touch with these cute striped hand towels.
Both of our kids told me independently, that they felt as tough they were in a beach house somewhere – that made my day, I can’t tell you! They love their new bathroom as much as I do, or maybe even more… Talk about gratification! Our new brass ceiling lantern, also provided to me by Wayfair, is chic and perfectly compliments all of the brass details in our space.
Lastly – our new shower curtain is the perfect compliment to everything in here. It has so many pluses – the vertical stripes and the eight foot length (I’ll never go shorter again!) also maximize on that vertical space I was referring to earlier – so important to play that up when you can in a small room. I wish I could have captured a better shot than this for the full effect…it’s showstopping! The blues truly could not be a better match, and I love the quality of this curtain. It’s a beautiful thick cotton and has a nice hefty weight to it. I love it so much, I may even buy another one and use it to recover our living room ottoman…again! If you’ve followed along with me for a while, then you know what I’m talking about..See how that piece has changed over time here and here!Thank you so much for taking this little makeover tour with me, leave a comment below and tell me what you think! I want to say a very big thank you to Wayfair for providing the lighting for our makeover, I’m so happy with the results, and how they perfectly they suit our bathroom. I LOVE this so much that I ordered this paper! Did you do a pre-paste on the walls or just hang it? Plan on doing it this week and it’s my 1st time too!

Suzi thank you so much!! Ok just the thought of mold makes me dizzy, so yes, I think you’re right haha! This looks so real and even more so in person! Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to stop in!

Thank you Delina! I’m so happy you like my blog and our bathroom! I still can’t believe the difference…it’s amazing what color can do to transform a room, and small bathrooms are the perfect place to experiment! I say you just go for it. It’s not easy, and it can be frustrating, but you can do it! I’m happy you like the lighting and the shower curtain too – it really makes it feel so much bigger, you should see it in person! Thanks so much for stopping by to say hi and for your sweet words! xo
Maybe not quite as good as you, Joni! I’m really wanting real grasscloth in the dining room, in navy…how gorgeous would that be?! I’d never attempt it myself though! Maybe you can come for a visit and help! You can give me tips ;) xoxo
Your bathroom makeover looks incredible! I love the wallpaper and have never tried it before and quite frankly I’m scared of how I would do but after seeing yours it makes me want to give it a try. The lighting is so pretty and amazing how the 8ft shower curtain makes the space look bigger! Love your blog!
It looks just lovely, Tamara. I really like the wall paper and in this space it’s the right one not only texture wise but also easier to clean than the real grass cloth. Next time you will be a pro at hanging wall paper!
Beautiful! Great choice to stay with the faux…could not tell until you mentioned it. Grass cloth, which I adore also, holds dust and mold spores…you trusted your intuition and scored!
Aww, you’re so welcome, Tam. The outcome is so perfect. Are we going to see more wallpaper projects done by you in the future? You’re a pro now.?
Hi Denise! Thank you so much! I couldn’t be happier with the results and I’m so glad I went for it and hung it up! It really does look just like grasscloth, so hard to tell it’s not! And yes, this is pre-pasted :)
Bree thank you so much my friend! I knew you’d love this paper! I really do love this so much and I’m so happy you like it too! Thanks for stopping by! xo
Tamara!! What a gorgeous job you did on this space…BRAVO my friend!! The paper is gorgeous and the lights are spectacular! I know you are loving this and I can see why you come in here several times a day to take it all in!! It’s stunning!!! xoxo
Simple, yet elegant…just the way I like my spaces. For being a printed paper, it sure does have the appearance of a grass cloth. Was the wallpaper pre-pasted?
Melissa, I can’t tell you how happy that makes me!! I love that you’re inspired here – that truly means so much. And small space living can be tricky for sure! Make it what you love and you’ll be happy no matter what! You will love this paper if you go with – such an amazing imitation!! Thanks for you kind words and for stopping by to say hi!
