Ingredients

  • 3 Large tart apples, peeled and cut into chunks (or 4 medium apples) I love to use Macintosh
  • 3/4 Cups Packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 Cup Flour I like to use unbleached flour
  • 1/2 Cup Quick cooking rolled oats
  • 1/3 Cup Salted butter, softened
  • 2 Tsp Ground cinnamon
  • 1 Tsp Ground nutmeg
  • 1 Pinch Salt

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 375F

  2. Peel and cut apples into chunks

  3. Mix with 1 tsp of cinnamon (the second tsp is for the crisp topping)

  4. Spread in 8 x 8 greased baking dish

  5. Combine the rest of the ingredients, using a fork to break up large clumps

  6. Spread over the apples evenly and cover completely

  7. Bake for 30 minutes, or a little longer for extra crispy topping

  8. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or heavy cream

Recipe Notes

I prefer using 3 large apples instead of 4 medium ones for this recipe and sometimes I'll even make some extra crisp topping! I also prefer salted butter to unsalted, and an added sprinkle of salt on top before baking, adds even more delicious flavor. This is best served with vanilla ice cream, or heavy cream...so yummy!
