ONE ROOM CHALLENGE : MASTER BATH MAKEOVER – WEEK 1

| |

I’m sharing exciting news today! I’m joining in all the fun for one of the most anticipated blogging events there is, the One Room Challenge. If you’re not familiar with what it is, it’s a biannual design event hosted by Linda of Calling It Home, in partnership with House Beautiful Magazine. Twenty design bloggers are asked to participate and show off their design skills, and anyone else who wishes to participate can join in as a guest participant – that would be me ;) There’s a catch though – the challenge lasts only six weeks, and in that timeframe, all participants must complete their one room challenge, as well as provide a progress update on the space each week. So today kicks off the start of that six weeks, and I’ll be tackling our master bathroom! I am so excited! Without further ado, please join me here, each Thursday, as my hubby and I take on our master bathroom makeover and transform it from a pretty space to a spectacular one! Before I begin and reveal my plan, I want to extend an incredibly HUGE thank you to The Mine for being the main sponsor for my project – I’m very grateful that I’ll be able to bring my vision to full fruition with their incredible help and generosity. I’d also like to thank Tonic Living for providing a gorgeous and elegant custom roman blind for our window as well – just wait until you see it! *Affiliate links are provided throughout, or at the bottom of this post for your shopping convenience – see my full disclosure policy here.
Ok, here we go! To give you a little history, and for those of you that don’t know, we built our home almost 8 years ago, with the intention of flipping it, and then building again. The objective was to keep our costs as low as possible, so, we dove head first into finishing most of the interior of our home ourselves, and tried to make as many cost effective decisions as possible.
One of those decisions, was the purchase of this vintage dresser that we converted into our vanity. Some things you don’t foresee when taking on a project of this scale – the amount of time, energy and multiple projects that simply overtake your life can become daunting and overwhelming. This house was a first full blown DIY project for us, and at the time, our kids were tiny! Living at my parents’ and commuting 30 minutes, twice a day, working until the early morning hours every day for 5 months, definitely took it’s toll on us! We were just too tired toward the end, and left many things unfinished, like our vintage vanity (and much more that you don’t see!).We painted it a beautiful seafoam blue/green, but never got around to painting the drawer fronts or changing the hardware. Eight years later, it remains the same…and now it’s time to move on. I love my vintage chandelier and have had it for about 15 years. It has graced our dining room in our first home, illuminated our kitchen in our second home, and has been residing in our bathroom in this home. Now the time has come for this elegant beauty to take a bow. I have a whole new lighting scheme planned – and it’s gorgeous! Many parts of the bathroom will remain as is – our shower is still in perfect condition, and although I’d love some brass finishing details to coordinate with the other brass elements we’ll be using, the chrome door handle, trim and hinges will be staying. For a more cohesive look and so the shower doesn’t look ‘out of place’, I’ll be leaving some of the other chrome fixtures in the bathroom in place as well. The floors will also remain the same.
We’ll be updating the toilet (which I still need to find!), and possibly adding recessed shelving in the wall above it.The current plan is to paint everything a crisp white – Ultra Pure White by Behr – the same color we’ve used on all of our moldings throughout our home. We’ll be adding panelling above the chair rail, as well as custom mirrors for the vanity. The below image by Fox Group Construction is our inspiration behind the vision for the mirrors and moldings that we’ll be installing.
Here is my mood board – you can see that for the most part, it has a traditional, old-world feel to it, but the color palette also has a clean and contemporary edge. The brass details of the hardware, fixtures and lighting is what I’m really excited about! Of course the vanity, with it’s carrara marble top is pretty amazing too! A little bit of blue and white chinoiserie always helps to bring in a feminine, chic element.
